How Often Should You Pump a Residential Septic Tank?

There is no single calendar date that fits every house. Tank size, household size, and what goes down the drains all change how fast solids build up.
Still, most homeowners need a real interval, not “we’ll wait until it smells.”
A practical starting point
For most 1,000 to 1,500 gallon residential tanks common around Batavia and the western suburbs, a solid starting range is every three to five years. Household size matters more than square footage — more people means more water through the same tank.
